The students of Jiangsu Agri-Husbandry Vocational College (JAHVC), Yang Yang and Wang Xiang Gang performed traditional dance, the dance of Lenggang Pergaulan.

 

They were along with 5 Indonesian students, two of whom were from Papua, impressed all the audiences: the graduates, the guests and the parents of the students on the 31st graduation celebration at State Polytechnic of Jember. As the students danced Lenggang Pergaulan, the audience were raising for applause. The students succeeded performing the dance by doing rehearsal intensively.

 

At the first time, Yang Yang thought that the dance of Lenggang Pergaulan was difficult to practice that he found difficulties in understanding and following the movement of the dance.

“The dance of Lenggang Pergaulan is categorized as difficult dance. It is difficult for me to follow and to learn the movement of the dance”, Yang Yang said.

 

“The two Chinese students performed the dance beautifully although they only had two months for practice. As the dancers finished, the audience gave a crowd applause” Said Muh. Munih Dian Widianta, S.kom, the vice director of student affairs.

 

Muh. Munih explains that State Polytechnic of Jember provides chances for exchange students from abroad to perform traditional dance.

 

“On the previous graduate celebration, the students of exchange program performed traditional dance too. They performed Gambyong dance”, Muh. Munih explained.

 

According to the Director of State Polytechnic of Jember, Ir. Nanang Dwi Wahyono, MM. The traditional dance performance shown by foreign students is part of the core of Bahasa dan Budaya Indonesia course (Indonesia Language and Culture course). It is a compulsory course for the students of exchange program between State Polytechnic of Jember and Jiangsu College

 

Introduction to Indonesian culture is one of important points on Bahasa dan Budaya Indonesia (Indonesian Language and Culture) course. State Polytechnic of Jember provides 16 meetings for the students of Jiangsu Agri-Industry to learn Bahasa Indonesia. The course is to introduce Indonesian language and culture. Further, the objective of the course is to ease the students of Jiangsu College both in daily and academic communication. In addition, State Polytechnic of Jember provides chances for the students to learn traditional dances and local wisdom, such as Pencak Silat (traditional self-defense)-as an Indonesian traditional sport.

 

“By learning Indonesian culture, the students are able to share knowledge and story according to their experiences during their studies at State Polytechnic of Jember. Further, their stories will be word of mouth promotion in Tiongkok”, Nanang Dwi Wahyono explained.

 

Note: The students of Jiangsu Agri-Animal Husbandry Vocational College Tiongkok (in the back  row) along with students of State Polytechnic of Jember performed Lenggang Pergaulan dance on 31st graduation ceremony of State Polytechnic of Jember which was conducted in Perjuangan 45 hall.
